On October 2, a meeting was held in São Paulo between union leaders from the food, chemical, and plastics sectors and North American unionists about the just transition, which can be summarized as a paradigm shift from the extractive and predatory mode of production, which would start to operate based on regenerative and sustainable actions, based on equity and justice.
In Madrid, the director of occupational safety of the IUF Regional has been promoting meetings with the Spanish (Comisiones Obrera - CCOO) and Italian (CGIL) trade union centers. In addition to climate-related issues, the consequences that could affect the planet if there is no change in the face of environmental pollution were also discussed, such as catastrophes that bring widespread hunger and new pandemics, for example.
Some initiatives have already been presented, such as Livres (an organized group that produces healthy and organic food) or the Just Transition Alliance (another organized group that fights for support for workers who may lose their jobs due to the closure of polluting companies where they work). ObAgro (an initiative that organizes researchers and the labor movement to research and address issues related to health and work) also presented the projects it has been developing, such as research on unhealthy conditions and special retirement for meatpacking plant workers.
The next activity will be a video conference on November 5, and should bring together union leaders from Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay, and Europeans (Spanish and Italian), to discuss how to organize and present proposals for debate at COP 30 in Belém (November 2025). Interested parties can contact ObAgro to participate. (https://www.obagro.com.br/contact-8).
